MindJet has asked me to present a webinar on how I use MindManager to get things done. I agreed, and on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at 10:00 AM (PST) I will present a free webinar, entitled MindManager as a Knowledge Management Tool: How I use MindManager and Lotus Notes to get things done. That's the fancy title. My working title is "Mind Mapping in the Digital Sandbox." (See description below)

I don't consider myself an expert in MindManager - to me that implies that I know all there is to know about Mind Mapping. (I don't.) Rather, I think of myself as a perpetual student of tools and methodologies for productivity and knowledge management. I'm always ready to learn and to share what I've learned.

I plan to share how I use MindManager in my daily work and how I've integrated it with other software tools that I use. No sales pitch, just show-and-tell about some of the geek tools I use daily.  I plan to cover a range of topics, including how I use MindManager and Lotus Notes and how I use MindManager teaching my children and coaching robotics teams. I plan to leave ample time for questions and answers.

This will be a fun opportunity, I look forward to it as much for the opportunity to share as to learn from your questions and comments. My goal is to make this presentation as informative as possible, so I invite you to submit the questions that you would like me to answer or things you would like to see. I look forward to hearing from you.

Please post your questions below. Also, if you blog, please help me get the word out about this webinar.

I've provided a link to sign up for the webinar at the end of this post.

MindManager as a Knowledge Management Tool:
How I use MindManager and Lotus Notes to get things done.

Wednesday, March 28, 2007
10:00 am Pacific Daylight Time

Consultant and eProductivity Specialist, Eric Mack, will give us a tour of his world and how he works and how he uses Mind Manager as a visual thinking and planning tool. He will discuss how he uses Mind Manager as a visual dashboard and planning tool for project and action management. He will also share how he uses Mind Manager on a daily basis as a support tool for getting things done with the GTD methodology and how he uses Mind Manager as a research support tool for Knowledge Management. Finally, he will show us how he uses MindManager to brainstorm and track projects and actions stored in Lotus Notes databases. In addition to using Mind Maps at work, Eric uses them when home-schooling his children and when coaching robotics teams. We've asked him to share a little bit about how he teaches the kids to use Mind Maps to organize their thinking and strategy when planning for a paper or a competition. At the conclusion of the webinar, Eric will be available to answer your questions.

Hi Eric...do you know if this will be recorded? I know most of the other MindJet webinars have, so I hope this will be the case as well. I'll be in Germany that day but I really would love to see this. Thanks!

Yes, Chris, it is my understanding that MindJet will record this and make it available with the rest of their recorded webinars at http://www.mindjet.com/us/company/events/webinars_recorded.php?s=3. Meanwhile, if you have any questions or topics you'd like me to cover, let me know. - Eric

I'm definitely interested in hearing about your MindManager integration efforts with Lotus Notes. Do you happen to share maps with others and use Notes as a storage facility for doing that? It's always very interesting to hear other user's tips and tricks. Cheers...

Well done, Eric. I like your entrepreneurial spirit, your attitude about going in ready to learn from others, and your suggestion of pre-seminar questions. Best of luck!

I will blog it for you. I just got a copy of MindJet (like 2 days ago) at the prompting of another person so I am anxious to see how you integrate it.

I would be interested in hearing if or how your GTD techniques in Lotus Notes can be applied to a user in a corporation that doesn't give users access to do much customization or training beyond using corporate email and databases.

I'd be interested to know two things:

1. Do you use any of the GTD-oriented MindManager plug-ins? I think they're Results Manager and GyroQ. Why or why not?

2. I know MindManager integrates nicely with several applications (including, apparently, a few different methods for integrating with MS Outlook). Is this a one or two-way integration, and do you rely on it (by "two-way" I mean a true synchronization, not just a import/export dump)?

Thanks, and I'm looking forward to your presentation.

Hi Eric.

1. First, I would like to know how to create a new LNotes client database for testing during your seminar, without jeopardizing the other existing databases.

2. How to set clearly identified projects and subprojects created with mindmanager maps, in the calendar and todo features of LNotes?

Appropriate screen sizes to be productive with MindManager

Looking forward to the presentation. Am unsure if I might have a time conflict, but if I do, I will definitely catch the replay.

My question is about using MindManager, in context of your usage, with various screen sizes. Do you consider the new 7" UMPC screens practical, or is a "regular sized" screen essential for mind mapping work without frustration?

These are all great questions! Keep them coming!

I'll do my best to answer all of them during the webinar.

Appropriate screen sizes to be productive with MindManager

I use MM on a 12" tabletPC and it is a little crowded for everything. I imagine the UMPC would be even worse. They have a trial, download and install. See if it works for you.

MM as a knowledge base component

I'm NOT a Lotus Notes user, but use MM heavily as part of managing my daily tasks, notes, projects, etc. I'm looking for a more general picture of integrating MM with other KB tools and practices, rather than specifically Lotus Notes. In fact, I'd be more interested in learning your thoughts on integrating MM with Microsoft OneNote.

Thanks for presenting this.

To Bob O'Malley'a question: I've been using Gyro's ResultsManager for GTD-style task management for about 8 months now, and I still use it almost daily. That's a STRONG indication that I like it and haven't found anything better. However, I'm not a total convert to the GTD religion, so maybe I'm not the best example. I just find ResultsManager helps me stay on top of the myriad of tasks in my world.

re: Sign up for my How I use MindManager webinar

Jerry, I don't plan to cover MindManager an Outlook as many people have covered this topic well and I'm not sure I can add much of value. I suggest visiting the Mindjet past webinars page to see Michael Linenberger's excellent presentations on MindManager and Outlook.

I am a Notes developer and a MindManager power user, so I'm a "show me the code" kind of guy. Anything technical in terms of your Notes-MM integration would be much appreciated.

Structuring complex maps

Do you know of any best practices guides for structuring complex maps? I assume there aren't any, so if you could comment on guidelines from your own experience, I would appreciate it. For example, when do you add information to the map as a new node as opposed to putting it into the node's notes?

Tablet vs. large monitor

I have discovered MindManager to be a killer app for my 26" monitor. I am considering switching to a tablet computer, but won't that be a step down to be forced to squeeze my work into a 12" screen?

In other words, does the benefit of using a pen on the screen outway the loss of a huge amount of screen real estate assuming portability is not a factor?

Just discovered your blog via Credit Union Indirect Lending's mention of your webinar.

Will be back to learn more.

I've often wondered if an application like MindManager might be a fit for me.

Thanks for extending the conversation!

Keep creating,

re: Sign up for my How I use MindManager webinar

Phillip, I'm actually waiting for Mindjet to send me the full webinar recording to review. The current file they sent was truncated at 40 minutes. I've sent another request. I'll post details when I have them.

I signed up for this but missed out attending. Do you know when the webinar would be made available by Mindjet?

I haven't been able to find it on their site.

Eric - I attended the webinar - excellent job. It is my understanding that the map you used was to be made available. Searched around on Mindjet and didn't find it - so thought I would ask. Thanks again.

re: Tablet vs. large monitor

Doug, if portability is not an issue, get the largest tablet you can. It's for that reason that I keep my Tecra M4 around. it's big, but I like the screen size. The pen is a useful interface for mobile mapping, especially in meetings. otherwise, the keyboard is probably more productive. YMMV Check my blog topics on Tablet PC and mapping for other ideas.

"It's for that reason keep my Tecra M4 around."

Does this mean you're no longer YABHTU? Have you reverted back to a traditional laptop?

Can't wait to see it. We recently integrated the Cirilab Knowledge Generation Engine(TM) with MindManager and Lotus Notes.

I can't find your webinar on How you use MM and I would really like to see it.

Am I looking the wrong place, or was it moved?

Any ideas or maybe a link, I missed.

In 2007, you referenced an article by Michael Linenberger as a good source of learning to utilize both Mindmanager and Outlook. I am a complete newbie to both MM and Outlook and therefore interested in your recommendation. However, I was unable to find on MM site. Are you able to provide a link?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
