This year marks my 25th year as a technology consultant and eProductivity specialist. In that time, I've learned a lot about working with staff, being self employed and, in the past 12 years, about working from a home office.
As I reflect on the past and think about what I want to accomplish in 2007, I decided to make a list of some of the things that I enjoy about my work and about working from home.
Some obvious aspects that I enjoy are the ability to follow my interests, choose my clients (that's a big one) and my work, and work from home.
Here are a few more ...
Twenty-five things I like about my work:
• It's my opportunity use my God-given talents in work I enjoy
• I get to work with the latest gear, gadgets, and technology
• I have a quick commute to the office (30 seconds, down the stairs)
• I work with a group of highly talented and creative people
• I get to spend 2-3 hours a day studying technology and business
• I do not have to travel often; I can do most of my work from home
• When I discover a better way of doing things, clients reward me
• I can support my wife in homeschooling our children
• I can be as selective in choosing my clients as they are about me
• I have a beautiful corner office with windows
• My clients know my the names of my wife and children
• I rarely miss a meal with my family because I had to work late
• My clients are some of the nicest and most interesting people
• I don’t need a key to the executive washroom
• I can develop my ideas in my own computer lab and machine shop
• It's an opportunity to model professionalism in front of my children
• I can take my daughters to work with me whenever I want
• Many of my clients have become friends, too.
• I only have to wear a suit when I want to
• I can observe my children at school, anytime I want
• I have a reserved parking spot
• My wife does not mind if I have the hots for my children’s teacher
• My clients appreciate my work and they pay me very well
• I can experience work as a calling, an opportunity to serve others
• I can kiss my wife or hug my children anytime I want
What do you like about your work?

Great list indeed. And having actually been to your home and home office, I can 2nd the fact that you've got a neat set up.

I, too, work from home, and have off and on (mostly on) for almost 30 years now (individual & employee benefits, mostly health plans & term life). I enjoy & agree with most of your comments, though I'm somewhat "further down the road" than you (at 57, my kids are long out of the house & now starting families). On a side note, it's helps me a lot to read blogs of folks such as you who also work from home &/or are self-employed; I find it encouraging and often learn new ideas, tips, & approaches (like GTD about 2 years ago, which has been a big help). Keep posting, my boy!

Eric is a testimony to the work we have been doing for 26 years, writing and helping people work from home. His helpfulness to me has been invaluable.

Eric,
It's refreshing to see someone so focused on wanting what they have, not having what they want.

Indeed, I find that counting my blessings is an easy way to get over/avoid a slump in attitude.

I'm thinking more and more that working from home will play a significant role as my career develops. Reading success stories like yours only helps with that, Eric.
Congratulations on the last 25 years.

Thanks, Chris. There are certainly challenges, to be sure, but the blessing of being with my family, encouraging my wife and children, and getting frequent hugs from those I love makes it all worthwhile.

Hi,
Its a good list.I too enjoy working from home. The main reason is my kids.Because they are very little. So i can take care of my children instead of putting some one for my kids care.I think both of us thoughts are similar.
