Pillars of KM Value Creation
Content - the information preserved and communication of ideas
Context - the experiences of people in the practice of using content
Community - Groups of people engaged in common practices and sharing a tact body of knowledge
Discussion of Xerox, and Paper.,
Paper will always be value for knowledge management. The affordances of paper are huge.
Paperless office hasn't happened and probably won't. The purpose of paper may have changed, but the use of paper has not.
"Knowledge is information put into productive use by people."
Over 50% of knowledge transfer in an organization is personal - through paper. (Paper is often involved.)
KM Solutions require support for the way that work gets done recognize both authorized structures and emergent work patterns..
- Org Chart vs Communities
- Context of work practice
-Production and use of Content/
Processes must be symbiotic with practices. Adaptive processes are:
- Human Mediated
Lesson learned in Docushare, if you allowed user to create security profile, it worked. Previously, people didn't use it.
Viral uptake of KM tools - closely tied to user-centered design. A process for review and recognition lead to phenomenal growth.
Web 2.0 provides toolkits for KM
- User 'written' apps generate CONTENT
- 'Linking' enabled maintenance of (shared) CONTEXT)
- Social connectivity provides 'Community'
Believes that in a few years we will not be talking about knowledge management; we will be talking about sensemaking. (e.g. Snowden)
